    2007 Alberta Coaches Forum
    March 10, 2007

    Keynote Speaker
Alexsandra "Sandy" Howard has a long and successful equestrian career including representing the USA in international dressage competitions (Olympic and World Championships) on three European tours. Her outstanding California-bred Thoroughbred gelding Bull Market was one of the powerhouses of US dressage during the 70's and 80's and helped to get dressage freestyle started in this country with electrifying performances at Devon, Knoll Farm and IEO York.

An "S" level judge, Sandy regularly conducts "L" judge learning programs as a USDF Faculty member in addition to regular judging duties. In 1990, intrigued by the questions posed during a CDS Annual Meeting lecture, she began a very rewarding collaboration with Mary Wanless on developing an advanced understanding of the biomechanics of the effective dressage seat. Sandy clinics around the States incorporating this revolutionary approach with traditional dressage training, teaching riders of all levels.

Practical Horseman, Sept/Oct issue. has an excellent article by Sandy on sit trot.

2006 presentation to USDF judges forum on effective rider position

As we speak, Sandy Howard is booking her flights to Edmonton. We’ve had some email issues that I hope will be cleared up this week.

  • Saturday, March 10 – Dressage Coaches Forum 2007 (ADA Sponsored)
  • Flying Colours Stables, Wetaskiwin
  • Keynote Speaker - Sandy Howard, California
  • Morning - DVD presentation (from the USDF 2006 Judges Forum)
  • Lunch - with coaches (time to network)
  • Afternoon - demo riders, working in the arena, on effective rider position. Demo rider 1; AA heading to First Level, trying to break through the “sit trot” ceiling (a need for all coaches to learn to effectively teach). Demo rider 2; a very good, body aware, professional rider; to demonstrate the small changes in rider position that can affect the horse in a big way. There may be time for more demo riders.
  • Sunday, March 11 - Riding Clinic with Sandy Howard (FCS Sponsored)
  • Sunday, all day, will be a “typical” riding clinic (Sandy’s riding clinics are a lot of walk work initially, to produce the body changes). The riders in the clinic will be chosen to work as many different levels and issues as possible.

All the coaches from the forum on Saturday will be invited to audit ($20/day) and maybe ride ($120/ride?; final cost/ride to be determined in Feb) on Sunday.

I’ll set up an application form for riders, for Sunday, in the next couple of weeks. Horse level, rider experience, rider issues, horse issues. We should have a great cross section to learn from!

This is what we have so far. We’ll work out the details in the next month.

The idea with the Coaches Forum is to make it accessible to as many coaches as possible. Keep the Forum to one day and give you the option of two days. This will still give you a great educational experience without the expense of hotels/meals for the whole weekend. The Sunday will be a great learning day as Sandy will consolidate many of the ideas presented on Saturday.

So keep your calendar clear for March 10/11, 2007

    Dressage Tests Out Loud

  • Flying Colours Stables
  • Saturday, April 7
  • 9am to 4pm
  • Doreen Horsey. S level judge

This clinic has been booked with Doreen for April. She will be miked, with a scribe, and judge out loud all tests for the auditors to hear and record. We should have 20 to 25 rides for the day. There will be a representation of rides from Training Level AA to Advanced Level. Applications for riders and auditors should be ready to send out in the next couple of weeks.

Some highlights of Doreen’s busy season - Dressage International de Blainville, Dressage at Silver Hill (Texas), Golden State Dressage Festival (CDI) Rancho Murieta (California).

We are looking forward to her expertise at C in April!
